  • Prince Rainier and Princess Grace meeting Monegasque people in the courtyard of the Royal Palace. Monaco 1956 for the official reception of the wedding presents. Grace Kelly wore a pale blue chiffon day dress by the California designer James Galanos. She accessorized z^the dress with a small headpiece of matching blue ribbon, white gloves and the same Morabito needlepoint bag she had carried to the Academy Award of 1955. Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I, Standard Steel Sports Saloon, was a wedding-gift by the Conseil Nationale de Monaco to their Souvereign to celebrate the marriage. When the car was ordered the specifications included that Crown and Cypher were to be applied to the front doors – thus giving off this was an owner-driver car (cars exclusively chauffeur-driven showed the Armorial Bearings on their rear doors). Indeed The Prince and his wife, too, are known to have driven this car frequently. His Serene Highness’ driving attitude (speedy – to put it mildly) on a later visit to Rome in 1957 did surprise the escorting Carabinieri on their motor-bikes; such they had neither expected from this motor car nor from the Souvereign of the Principality. All of the prince's cars had license plates ending in 77. Monaco 1956. - Photo by Edward Quinn

  • Prince Rainier and Princess Grace after the civil wedding ceremony. The bride wears a simple lace suit while the groom's attire was a formal morning dress suit. The bride was, however, beautiful in the beige lace and dusty rose silk suit that Helen Rose had designed. According to an announcement made by MGM the previous day, Grace Kelly’s civil ceremony output, white "naturally not so elaborate 35 the format down", was "designed with equal care'" The fitted bodice had rounded collar and silk-cord bow at the high neck and closed down the front withlace-covered buttons; the skirt flared into a full hem at at 14 inches above the floor. The fabric, detailed by MGM’s embroiderers to produce an unusual effect, added interest to the simple suit: over a foundation of what MGM called "ashes of roses taffetas the moral pattern of the machine-made "blush-tan" lace was outlined with dusty pink silk floss embroidery for additional depth. The accessories that completed the bridal ensemble were also carefully considered and constructed. A small, close-fitting hat trimmed with silk flowers, designed by Helen Rose, sat prettily on the back of the head. Dusty Fink silk pumps with lace overlay to match the suit were created by leading American shoe designer David Evins. Short white gloves added the final touch. Monaco 1956. - Photo by Edward Quinn
