Kim Novak had been the queen of the Cannes Film Festival in 1956. She came again in 1959 as her film "In the Middle of the Night" was presented. Cary Grant had been separated from his third wife, the actress Betsy Drake, since 1958. The romance between Grant and Kim Novak was one of the highlights of the 1959 Festival.
